  6.   Walled off from the world by the desert and the strictest
  7. military secrecy, Muroc Air Force Base is a strange sort of
  8. community. In all it does, it is dedicated to military aircraft
  9. performance, with special emphasis on speed. In the realm of
  10. speed it also has its king. He is Captain Charles ("Chuck")
  11. Yeager, 26, a modest blue-eyed test pilot with an infectious
  12. grin and an easy West Virginia drawl. What makes Chuck Yeager
  13. outstanding, even among the crack pilots at Muroc, is the that
  14. his name is certain to go down prominently in aviation history
  15. books. Chuck Yeager was the first man to break through the
  16. dreaded "sonic wall" and fly faster than sound.

  18.   What he experienced at the critical moment when he crossed
  19. the sonic barrier is a tightly guarded secret. But when he
  20. looked at his instruments after a few moments, he realized that
  21. he was flying actually faster than sound. The terrible sonic
  22. wall lay far behind. The X-1 had not disintegrated. It still
  23. flew beautifully ("a pilot's dream") and Chuck was still in one
  24. piece.

  26.   When the fuel was gone (it lasts only 2 1/2 minutes at full
  27. power), the X-1 slowed down and was back on the other side of
  28. sound's great wall. Chuck scavenged the last of the dangerous
  29. oxygen and alcohol from the system by flushing it with nitrogen.
  30. Then he began the long glide to earth, listening to the clock
  31. ticking on the instrument panel. He somehow found this "awful
  32. boring," he says, and welcomed his spurt of interest when he
  33. landed the X-1 at close to 165 miles an hour later and rolled
  34. to a stop on Muroc's smooth surface.
